It's not just us

A few recent books of interest which in various way deal with the possibility of human change

Juan Enriguez and Steve Gullan's Evolving Ourselves (http://www.evolving-ourselves.com) discusses the uses and potential uses of a wide range of technologies.

Ian Morris' Foragers, Farmers and Fossil Fuels (http://press.princeton.edu/titles/10419.html) is mostly about the long history of the human species and how our values have evolved based on the energy we have harvested from nature, but it also speculates on the human future, as does Margaret Atwood in her very lively response to Morris' text.

Finally, Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind devotes it's last, long chapter to an overview of the various ways in which the future of the human species is depended on decisions made by humanity itself.

All three are recommended.
